Eminent Economist Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri passes away

Eminent economist, noted academic and policy advisor Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri, who bewitched and inspired generations of students at the Delhi School of Economics with his lively lectures on an ostensibly arid subject, passed away at his Pune residence, aged 81.
Awarded the Padma Bhushan in the field of Trade and Industry in 2005, Dr. Chaudhuri served as Director, Delhi School of Economics and was a visiting professor of economics at the Universities of Harvard and Minnesota.

Astra missile successfully test-fired from Sukhoi-30 MKI in Odisha

The indigenously-developed beyond visual range air-to-air missile, Astra was successfully launched from Su-30 MKI fighter jet in two developmental trials conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha. Once inducted, India would join select group of nations which possess this kind of stat-of-the-art weapon. The 3.8-metre tall Astra is a radar homing missile and one of the smallest weapon systems developed by DRDO. It is the first state-of-the-art air-to-air missile developed and validated by DRDO. It is one of the most modern, stand-off beyond visual range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAM).
Various laboratories of the DRDO, including the missile complex at Hyderabad, CEMILAC and DGAQA collaborated with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Indian Air Force in developing Astra.

Meghalaya achieves 100% financial inclusion under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna

Meghalaya has achieved 100 percent success in implementing the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna. All households in the state have been successfully covered under the scheme. More than 5.53 lakh households have been covered with 1.55 lakh new bank accounts.In comparison to the urban population, rural population has given more response to the financial inclusion scheme by opening new bank accounts.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, a nationwide scheme was launched by the Modi government for financial inclusion of every household that does not have a bank account. According to the scheme, every family must have at least a Bank Account and head of the family will get life insurance coverage of Rs 1 lakh in case of accident.


£52,000 to save the bustard

Pramod Patil, a Pune-based ornithologist, has earmarked the £35,000 prize money he got with the Whitley Award (Green Oscar) for conserving the bird. While the £35,000 prize money he got with the Whitley Award for his work to save the critically endangered bird has gone into the corpus, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds of the U.K. has promised him £17,000 for his conservation efforts in the Thar Desert. The money will be channelled through BirdLife International, an international non-governmental organisation involved in conserving birds and their habitats.


SS Ahluwalia appointed as Chairman of JPC on Land Acquisition Amendment Bill, 2015

Former Union minister and BJP MP SS Ahluwalia was selected and appointed as the chairman of a Joint parliamentary Committee that will look into provisions of the land acquisition bill which is facing controversy. The Joint Committee of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha consisting of 30 members out of which 20 members from lok sabha and 10 members from Rajya sabha, might submit its report in Monsoon Session of parliament on the land bill which has  been already passed by the Lower House.

President inaugurated 50th anniversary of India’s first historic climb of Mt. Everest in 1965

President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the 50th anniversary of India’s first historic climb of Mt. Everest in 1965. The President will open the event at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Indian Mountaineering Foundation is organizing this event to celebrate the historic climb of Mt. Everest in 1965 by an Indian team led by Captain M.S. Kohli.

Peter M. Christian elected as eighth President of the Federated States of Micronesia. Peter M. Christian was elected as a senator in 2007 representing Pohnpei at-large and re-elected in 2011. He served as the Chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Communication during his 2007 term in Congress.
The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent sovereign island nation and a United States associated state consisting of four states – from west to east, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae – that are spread across the Western Pacific Ocean.

SBI & Amazon ink MoU for payment, commerce solutions

The country’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI), and e-commerce giant Amazon has signed an MoU for identifying potential areas of collaboration for payments and commerce solutions. SBI has the largest SME base in the country. E-tailers are set to gain even if a percentage of SBI’s SME customers adopt the online platform for their businesses. The bank is looking to tap Amazon’s expertise in connecting potential buyers and sellers, along with efficient ways of sourcing raw materials for existing customers.
